So we thought and thought and thought about it, and finally came to the conclusion that the Morgan 33 Out Island would be a better move than one of the larger boats, from several perspectives.
First, there is the fact that we're moving up from a 26-foot sloop. Marine insurance providers don't really like it when you move up too fast. Most are willing to accept an increase of 10 feet or less in overall length, but much above that and you either have trouble finding a willing provider, or you have to pay some rather hefty premiums. Moving to a 33-foot boat from a 26-foot boat represents only a 7-foot increase in overall length.
Second, as the young broker pointed out, when you try to buy services for your boat, everything is based on boat length: slip fees, bottom paint, haulout fees, practically everything! Longer boats cost more money to maintain, simply because they are longer.
Third, longer boats cost more to buy, simply because they are longer. Most of the bigger boats we saw were less than 8 feet longer, and didn't offer much better accomodations than the Morgan OI 33, but generally the asking prices were $10,000 to $25,000 higher. Didn't make much sense.
Anyway, today we made an offer, and now we have to wait.
